Entrevista a Alex Gross. Sobre lo contemporáneo; el oficio; el próposito; lo contenido, y otros vericuetos

Alex Gross es un artista visual que actualmente trabaja en Los Angeles, California y quién tecnicamente se especializa en pintura al óleo sobre lienzo. Contactamos a Alex un año atrás y comenzamos una conversación sobre su trabajo y la forma como se enfrenta a la construcción de sus imagenes. Alex Gross is a visual artist currently working in Los Angeles, California who technically specializes in oil paintings on canvas. We contacted Alex one year ago and started a brief conversation about his work and the way he approaches the construction of his images. Thanks ALEX for being a great and generous person… and also thanks to Dibujo Madrid for opening this reflexive window.

Lucas: En la práctica y en la teoría, qué diferencia su oficio, o que lo hace distinto, de cualquier otro?

Lucas: Practically and theoretically, what´s the difference between your occupation and any other?

Alex: Hay muchas diferencias. Mi ocupación es más que un simple trabajo; es el producto de mi expresión creativa. La mayoría de las personas con ocupaciones tradicionales toman a sus preocupaciones financieras y prácticas como aquellas de más importancia. Para mí, por supuesto que las consideraciones financieras son importantes, pero lo más importante es hacer arte del que me sienta orgulloso y del que me sienta a gusto al dejarlo en este mundo cuando en un futuro cuando ya no esté aquí. Deberá hablar por mí cuando yo no pueda hacerlo. Esto es muy diferente de la mayoría de las personas que tienen empleos tradicionales. Creo que este aspecto es similar con otras personas creativas. Directores de cine, músicos, comediantes, y otros creativos también tienen que hacer algo de lo que se sientan creativamente orgullosos. Para los artistas de verdad, esto es más importante que volverse ricos.

Alex: There are many differences. My occupation is more than just a job; it is the product of my creative expression. Most people with traditional occupations have financial and practical concerns as their most important issues. For me, of course financial considerations are important, but the most important thing is to make art that i am proud of, and which i feel comfortable leaving in this world, to last into a future when i am no longer here. It must speak for me when i cannot. that is very different from most people that have traditional jobs. I think this is similar with other creative people. Filmmakers, musicians, comedians, and other creatives also have to make something they feel creatively proud of.  For the real artists, this is more important than getting rich.

Lucas: Se puede cambiar el mundo con su oficio. Si no cambiar el mundo, ¿en qué se puede estar aportando?

Lucas: ¿Can the world be changed by your profession-function-purpose?. ¿What do you think is your contribution?

Alex: Espero que mi trabajo haga una pequeña diferencia en el mundo. Otras personas creativas me han influenciado como persona a través de sus obras de arte, música, cine, lo que sea. Entonces, creo, y me han dicho muchas personas, que mi trabajo ha tenido un efecto poderoso sobre ellos. En este sentido, mi obra ha tenido cierto impacto sobre el mundo. No sé que tan fuerte es, pero existe, y me siento orgulloso de este hecho.

Alex: I hope that my work makes a small difference in the world. Other creative people have influenced me as a person through their artwork, music, film, whatever. So, i believe, and i have been told by many people, that my work has a powerful effect on them. In this way, my artwork has had some impact on the world. I don’t know how strong it is, but it exists, and i am proud of this fact.

Lucas: Cómo dibujante, ilustrador o artista, qué opina de lo que se llama «arte contemporáneo» o en su defecto «aquí tu oficio – contemporáneo»?

Lucas: As a drawer, illustrator or artist, ¿What´s your opinion about what is called «contemporary»?

Alex: Creo que como persona creativa es importante tratar de hacer cosas nuevas y esto nos lleva a algunas formas de arte contemporáneo emocionantes como el vídeo, la instalación, y la performance. Sin embargo, también no hay nada de malo en formas de arte que no sean contemporáneas, como la pintura. Muchas personas aprecian obras de arte representativo porque es más fácil conectarse y relacionarse con ellas que muchos trabajos no-representativos contemporáneos que no consiguen conectar. Creo que es un error perseguir lo contemporáneo solo por el hecho de ser contemporáneo. Creo que un artista debe utilizar cualquier medio que mejor exprese su creatividad. Picasso utilizó un medio tradicional y anticuado como la pintura al óleo para hacer un trabajo muy contemporáneo y emocionante durante su vida. Por lo tanto, es posible utilizar medios no contemporáneos para hacer algo nuevo, moderno y contemporáneo, aunque algunos aspectos de la misma siguen siendo tradicional, o incluso pasados de moda. En lo que a mi respecta, la mayor parte del arte contemporáneo que me apasiona es la pintura figurativa sencilla.

Alex: I think that it is important to try to do new things as a creative person and this leads to some exciting contemporary art forms like video, installation, and performance. However, there is also nothing wrong with non-contemporary art forms, such as painting. Many people appreciate representational artwork because it is easier to connect to, and to relate to, than much contemporary, non representational work. I think it is a mistake to only pursue contemporary for the sake of being contemporary. I believe an artist should use whatever medium they like to best express their creativity. Picasso used a traditional and old fashioned medium, oil paint, to make some very contemporary and exciting work in his lifetime. So, it is possible to use non-contemporary means to make something new, modern, and contemporary, even if some aspects of it are still traditional, or even old-fashioned. As for me, most of the contemporary art that excites me is simple representational painting.

Lucas: ¿Cómo se leen tus imágenes?. ¿Crees que una imagen es contenido o es un contenedor?

Lucas: ¿How to read your images?. ¿Is an image a content or a container?

Alex: No tengo una forma concreta en la que quiera que la gente lea mis imágenes. Algunas imágenes tienen un fuerte mensaje político o social y son más fáciles de leer. Otras imágenes están más abiertas a la interpretación. De cualquier manera, me gusta permitir que el espectador tenga su propia experiencia con mi trabajo. Por lo general cuando la gente me cuenta su interpretación de mis pinturas, están muy cerca de las ideas con las que yo estaba trabajando en el momento que hice la pieza. Creo que mis imágenes comunican temas y emociones, sin que yo tenga que explicar lo que es la pintura. Si quería explicar todo esto sería escritor en lugar de pintor. Cuando ves una bailarina moverse, no necesitas que te digan lo que están expresando sus movimientos: Si los movimientos son de un buen bailarín, sientes las emociones. Creo que mi pintura debería entenderse de la misma manera. No necesita explicación.

Alex: I dont have a specific way that i want people to read my images. Some images have a strong political or social message, and its easier to read. Other images are more open to interpretation. either way, i like to allow the viewer to have his/her own experience with my work. usually when people tell me their interpretation of my paintings, it is very close to the ideas that i was working with when i made the piece. i think my images communicate themes and emotions, without my having to explain what the painting is about. if i wanted to explain everything, then i would just be a writer instead of a painter. when you watch a dancer perform, you dont need them to tell you what they are expressing: if they are a great dancer, you feel the emotions. I believe that my painting should be the same way. it needs no explanation. 

Lucas: De acuerdo a la entrevista, hasta el momento tus respuestas han mostrado una visión clara de tu forma de aproximación a la creatividad y la vida. Creo que sería un buen complemento si te pregunto acerca de tus influencias artísticas para cerrar la entrevista. Por ejemplo: Cuando estás trabajando y no sabes cómo seguir o continuar trabajando, dónde o cómo buscas?. ¿Qué influencia la construcción de tus imágenes y qué hace que sean una pintura?

Lucas: In accordance to the interview, I think that your answers so far have shown a clear view of your way of approaching creativity and life. I think would be very complementary if I ask you about your artistic influences to close the interview. For example: When you are working and you don´t know how to follow or proceed working, where or how do you search?. ¿What influences the construction of your images and makes it a painting?

Alex: Tengo una extensa carpeta en mi ordenador con imágenes que he fotografiado, y también con otras que he encontrado en Internet. Navego a través de ellas a menudo, jugando con lo que me viene a la cabeza, hasta que algo asoma. A veces, la idea viene de una canción que escuché, o algo que vi en la televisión, o afuera cuando estoy conduciendo. Al igual que si veo un cartel que me inspira, puedo dar vueltas a las ideas basándome en esto. Es un proceso muy nebuloso, y que ha tomado mucho tiempo para hacerse con una sensibilidad. Todavía tengo algunos períodos en los que no se me ocurre nada pero eventualmente las ideas fluyen. Esto puede requerir algo de paciencia. Y como ya he dicho, la toma de fotografías de las personas que quiero pintar a menudo ayuda a que las cosas comiencen de nuevo. Los conceptos surgirán más tarde.

Alex: I have a large folder in my computer with images that i have photographed, and also ones that i found online. I will browse through them often, playing with whatever comes into my head, until something emerges. Sometimes, the idea will come from a song i heard, or something i saw on television, or outside when i am driving around. like if i see a billboard that inspires me, i might play with ideas based on that. It is a very nebulous process, and it has taken a long time to get a feeling for it. I still have some periods where i can’t think of anything, but eventually more ideas will flow. It can require some patience. and as i said, taking pictures of people who i want to paint often helps get things started again. Concepts emerge later.
